We Heart It Community Spotlight: Salli Mandel

We Heart It - Style By Salli

While covering New York Fashion Week last month, we spotted a photographer outside Lincoln Center, snapping street style pics right alongside the pros. Obviously we just had to stop her–and were shocked to find out style blogger Salli Mandel of Style by Salli is only 15!

If you’ve ever wondered how to go from casual consumer to fashion blogger extraordinaire, read on — she’s got tons of tips for appropriate school shopping, getting creative with clothes and how she plans to turn her love of fashion into a career.

Hey Salli — thanks for chatting with us! Let’s start with the basics: what’s your favorite part of picking out your outfit and getting dressed in the morning?

I actually pick out my outfit the night before, or have an idea as to what I want to wear. Maybe I want to highlight a certain jacket, shoes or accessory. I love experimenting and trying new things [and] I’ve tried a ton of different styles. I usually pick out one item I know I want to wear, and then build around it accordingly. It’ so much fun to see what I can come up with, especially when I layer things, crop things, or sort of make items “different” so that I can get a ton of looks out of one item.

We know you write a lot about your favorite budget fashion websites — what the items you couldn’t live without, if you could only pick five?

My top 5 fashion favorites at the moment are:

  1. My black sandals from ASOS (that were only $13!). They go with everything (no exaggeration) and are super easy to walk around in all day.
  2. My black Céline nano. It’s important to have a basic bag. I invested in mine so I could get one I knew wouldn’t go out of style and that I could keep using a ton.
  3. A vest. Whether it be the infamous J. Crew herringbone vest, that I luckily grabbed at a sale over the summer, or a cheaper Old Navy vest, I find myself layering vests into my Fall and Winter wardrobes a ton. They are really versatile, especially a good black or navy one, and can be worn in so many different ways.
  4. A t-shirt dress. On those days when I can barely get myself out of bed to go to school, I like to wear something casual that is easy to just hop into and go. I love Brandy Melville t-shirt dresses because they’re really soft and are the perfect length for school. Pop one on, slide into some cute sandals, tie a plaid around your waist, and you’re good-to-go.
  5. My J. Crew field jacket. I have one in green that was a total score from the J. Crew Factory store and I’m so happy I got it when I did! It’s the cutest jacket and is perfect for layering over a button down, shift dress, or even a crop top.

How did you decide to start a blog? Have you always been a creative person?

Ever since I was little, I’ve been really creative. When I discovered blogs, I decided it was the perfect thing for me because it was something that would make me really happy and also help me later in my life, applying to colleges and making connections in the fashion industry.

What do you like to do, besides blog, to be creative and experiment with different mediums?

The three major things in my life at the moment are blogging, horseback riding, and school. I have a horse so that takes up almost all the free time that isn’t devoted to school or blogging. I’m totally okay with it because I love it! I love hanging out with my friends and living in a city makes it that much easier.*

*(Salli lives in Washington DC)

You attended Fashion Week in NY this year — tell us about that! How did you get hooked up with such an amazing gig? Any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers?

Yes! I’m super passionate about my blog and I want it to go far (like every other blogger out there). It’s sort of a confusing story, but I was emailed by a photographer’s assistant just to say hello and that she saw my blog and wanted to introduce me to the photographer. Of course, I was excited and got to talking with her and they said that they had a spot on their team to come photograph street style at NYFW. She asked me some questions about what I would add to the team and what my strengths and weaknesses are, and not long after she said I would be a perfect fit! I was ecstatic and I knew it would be an incredible experience.

I really put myself out there with my blog and try to make as many connections as I can with other bloggers, businesses, and photographers. While going into the shows is amazing, it’s really hard to come by tickets and invites like I did. I got a ton of emails and comments on my blog and Instagram about “how I got in” and other questions after I announced the news. My advice is to really get yourself out there and take as many opportunities as you can. They’ll start coming more if you really get people’s attention.

I had planned, if I wasn’t invited into the shows at Fashion Week, to just go and take street style pictures outside the tent, just so I could experience it. I recommend doing that, especially if it isn’t a huge hassle to get to the city, because while the shows were an amazing experience, I met more people outside the tent while shooting street style than when I was inside. I met a ton of bloggers and other people who would approach me, or I would approach them, and we’d exchange cards. That was the most inspiring part of my trip because connections are a huge part of blogging and being in the fashion industry.

Who are you favorite people to follow on We Heart It and what types of images do you typically gravitate towards?

I’m actually a fairly recent user of We Heart It, but I’m already addicted. My Friday night? Spent scrolling and clicking on the site (#noshame). I love searching for style pictures that incorporate items that I already own, so I can discover more ways to style them! I especially love street style pictures because I find them the most inspiring. My absolute favorit eperson I’m following is Mauu_W (aka Fashion Police because the style pictures are so cute and I seriously could heart every single image.)

You’re only 15, but have you started thinking about a career yet? How important to you is being creative in the future?

I have a huge dreams for myself, which can sometimes be disappointing, but overall I think it makes me work harder to make them come true. I dream to be a fashion business owner, but I want my blog to always be a part of my life. I hope to study business in college and hopefully travel around a lot. I’m a traveling addict and Europe is my absolute favorite place on Earth. Like they say, you can take a girl out of Europe, but you can’t take Europe out of a girl! I always want to use my creative skills, so a job that doesn’t involve my creativity is probably not the job for me!

6 Under-the-Radar Creative Jobs at NYFW

Models and designers are just the tip of the fashion industry iceberg… here are some other creative opportunities for the fashion-enthused!

1. Fashion Illustrator

Do you like markers more than people? Have you considered entering rehab over your sketchbook addiction? Do you sometimes wonder if your hand will permanently freeze into a pen-holding shape?

Fashion illustrators are hired by magazines, websites, brands and blogs to sketch everything from clothes to accessories. This fashion week, illustrator Meagan Morrison went from show to show quickly sketching looks and uploading them to her social media accounts and clients — her work has been featured by Marie Claire and Armani.

Perks: Direct access to editors and designers who may use your work in a story or campaign

2. Performer

One untapped music venue? Designer presentations.

Unlike in a traditional runway show with a soundtrack, many designers are opting for live music via an emerging artist, band or DJ. Kiki Rowe performed live at the SAUNDER presentation on a mini-stage, and DJ Samantha Ronson supported her sister (and super-cool designer) Charlotte Ronson at her presentation.

Singers, DJs, and musicians: if you’re trying to get exposure, research fashion events in your area and ask if you can audition to perform. Live music is so much cooler than a soundtrack.

Perks: Access to emerging designers, exposure to a highly creative community and perhaps a free outfit

3. Model Booker

If you find yourself constantly fan-girling over Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss, ask yourself: what if I could get paid to do that? And become besties with Car and Kar in the process?

Yes, it is true: there are people who make money staring at models and deciding which ones would best fit a designer’s show. They’re called model bookers, and they are a desperately-needed resource in any fashion capital.

Perks: Opportunity to attend fashion shows; make friends with models and designers; exposure to all types of beauty

4. Make-Up Artist/Hairstylist/Nail Artist

This one may seem obvious, but for anyone serious about getting experimental with make-up, nails and hair, working NYFW is a dream come true.

These beauty gurus are the literal trendsetters of the industry, dictating which lipstick colors, hair colors and nail trends are going to be IT in the next year — not to mention, all the gossip happens in the make-up chair!

Perks: Opportunity to collaborate with designers on looks; worldwide exposure; early access to new products

5. Street Style Photographer

Inside the tents at Lincoln Center, photographers need credentials to photograph the runway.

Outside, though? It’s fair game. And that’s where the real action takes place.

Anyone with a camera is welcome to hang outside the tents and snap pictures of all the fabulously decked-out We Heart It-celebs in-the-making.

Perks: Chance to practice your photography on willing models; unlimited content for your blog; possibility of selling photographs to major websites or magazines

6. Street Style Star

If you’ve ever dreamed of being noticed for your cray-cray bow collection or vintage sunglasses obsession, Lincoln Center during NYFW is the place for you.

Fashion-wise, the more original, the better. This is not the place to try to fit in, so leave your inhibitions at home. Wear your weirdest hat; match your bizarro socks with those vintage heels…and get ready to get noticed.

Perks: Opportunity to wear your most experimental outfit; possible worldwide attention as a trendsetter

Hearters, tell us in the comments section: what is your dream NYFW job?

Chit-Chat With the Merrell Twins

unnamedAs far as YouTubers go, the Merrell Twins, Vanessa and Veronica, hit on all cylinders: they play music, act and do challenges.

We recently had an absolutely fab chat with the 18-year-old Queens of Positivity (honestly, they never stop smiling) about everything from starting a YouTube channel to their creative process, and, yes, their love lives. (We had to ask, duh.)

By the way…if you’re looking for a funny YouTube channel to subscribe to, theirs is it!

What’s your favorite thing about We Heart It website and app? Have you inspired any of your friends to create accounts?

Our favorite thing about We Heart It is seeing all the creative pictures everyone posts! It’s really cool to see what people Heart. You can tell what a person is like by the pictures they post and Heart on We Heart It. Also people are just so creative and we love that!

We have inspired our friends and a lot of our YouTube subscribers to create accounts! They really enjoy We Heart It.

What was the first thing you hearted? Any fun stories behind it?

Our first picture we Hearted was a picture of a quote that says, “Laughing is the best exercise.

We just really liked this quote because we are always laughing! It’s one of the best things to do in life!

What types of photos do you like to look at on We Heart It? Do you ever use the things you heart for inspiration for your videos?

We love looking at all kinds of photos! Our favorite thing to look at is the “All Images” page because we like to see what everyone is posting about! There is usually hot guys, boy bands, adorable outfits, beautiful photography, pretty make-up, cute hair styles, inspirational quotes, animals and a bunch of other things! But you can always tell when something is really popular, like when The Fault in Our Stars movie came out, every one was hearting images about that movie! When the World Cup was on every one was hearting images about that! We just love seeing what is popular and staying in the loop!

You guys are obviously mega-creative. Where do you get your inspiration when it comes to being creative , either on YouTube or on We Heart It?

For We Heart It we like to post our own pictures of things we like or places we go to and quotes we love. When it comes to our YouTube videos we actually improvise a lot of things! We also like to see what is popular and create ideas based on that, whether it is a song, saying, a person, an action–basically anything! We write scripts for our videos and try to inspire others with our music.

merrell twins

How heavily do other We Heart It users and YouTubers influence your creative process? Do you usually get ideas for your collections and videos when you’re online, or out “in real life”?

We get ideas from both online and “in real life.” Like we kind of said earlier, people heart images that are popular at the moment, so we get inspiration based on what people heart the most. There are different accounts who influence us [focused on things] like fashion, photography, etc. But we really like to be original on We Heart It and YouTube.

There are a lot of comedy YouTubers we like to watch who inspire the type of comedy we do on our channel. We have a series of videos called “Survival Guide For ” and they’re just “tips” on how to survive certain things in life. We also do popular challenges that people request and cover popular songs.

You two are so creative in so many different ways — how do you switch gears? For example, what influences when you want to be serious vs. funny? Do you typically plan when you will create certain types of work or do you just go with your moods?

We always plan our videos. But like we said earlier, even when we have a plan, we improvise a lot! Our channel consists of  a lot comedy sketches but we are planning on covering some more serious topics in the future. We already have ideas of what we want to talk about.

How big of a part does being from California influence your taste in clothes, food and your general laid back attitudes?

California definitely has a different fashion sense than Missouri, where we are originally from. Our taste in clothes is very diverse! We feel that California is very laid-back about what people wear, meaning you can basically get away with wearing whatever. We have everything from floral print dresses to leather jackets, cute lacy shirts with bows to hipster crop tops. Attitudes out here are so laid-back and so chill! We feel like we can be ourselves and not be judged and we love it.

Where would you suggest your fans who want to become more creative in any capacity find their inspiration if they are unsure where to start?

If some one is unsure on where to start with being creative, we recommend on figuring out what you like to do. If you like art a lot, do something that involves art. If you like music, sing or play your heart out! It’s all about what you love to do. It could be something as simple as painting your nails or doing make-up. Just do… ANYTHING! And start now! Don’t wait for the “right time” to start being creative. Being creative and sharing what you love to do is an amazing feeling!

All right — we noticed someone has a giant crush on Cristiano Ronaldo. Who likes him more?

Vanessa loves Cristiano Ronaldo. I (Vanessa) just think he is a beautiful looking guy (hence he’s in the beautiful people collection a lot) He also is a very good soccer player and got me into liking soccer! (We are terrible soccer players, though.)

Veronica or Vanessa: let’s play a quick game of “Who is more likely to…”

…stay up all night editing a photo or video? Vanessa
…run out of photo storage on their phone? Vanessa
…have an intense celebrity crush? Vanessa
…make a sign and hold it up at a concert? Veronica
…plan their Halloween costume super far in advance? Veronica
…eat an insect voluntarily? (Chocolate covered ants, anyone?!) Veronica
…propose changing their name? This is a hard one because we both love our names!
…jump into a freezing cold swimming pool on a dare? Vanessa
…win at bowling? Veronica… she always wins at bowling!
…fall while ice skating? Vanessa
…break a world record? Veronica
…ask someone on a date? Neither one of us because we believe it’s not ladylike to ask a boy on a date 😛
…buy a shirt with a quote on it? Veronica
…fall asleep while talking online? Vanessa
…spill something? Vanessa

Of all your collections, which is your favorite to add to? (Link to collection)

Fashion and Summer! We love clothes and anything that has to do with summer!

You’re on a desert island and you can only bring one luxury item. The catch is, it has to be something you hearted. What do you bring?

Vanessa: I chose this one so I could escape the island!

Veronica’s: I chose this one because I could take the boat and find my way home!

If you had to sum up We Heart It in one sentence, what would you say?

We Heart It is a place where you can share your heart ❤
